About Us

For more than 25 years, Three Taverns has been sending a wide variety of mission teams across the street, around the country, and internationally. The early years were tougher. We experienced the challenges of traveling with unprepared people (including us!) We experienced that feeling that some of our work was shallow and only financing work that could have been done more economically by in-country people. We had some bad experiences with in-country leaders. It was tough - but those days are long gone.

Our mission leaders stumbled across Steve Saint's book, The Great Omission, and light bulbs went off. His work, experience, and research confirmed all that we were feeling. Many in-country missionaries don't want to host teams but the revenue helps fund what they really need to do. Many teams want "big bang salvations", exposure to the poor, or trips that suit their particular skills. Teams like these push to do what they want rather than what the missionaries really need. Many efforts make the in-country Christians hopelessly dependent on U.S. support instead of setting them up to be self-sustaining. And, many trips are simply glorified, feel-good vacations focused more on the team's experience versus Kingdom building.

Over the next ten years, we started asking what in-country people needed. We committed ourselves to learn the needed skills or recruiting skilled workers to go. We committed ourselves to empower, teach, and resource in-country people to own, do, and sustain their work. Our teams and leaders now deploy over 32 specific skills from multi-level construction, well drilling, solar power, leadership training, and yes, evangelism when it's needed.

We have published an open-source system and guide called The Perfect Trip that guides all of our efforts. We embrace the truth that those in-country, who know the language, who live there are the best people to win their world. Our role is to resource them to succeed.
